HEIC to PNG Converter
Need your iPhone photos in a format that supports transparency and lossless quality? Our free HEIC to PNG converter turns Apple HEIC/HEIF files into PNGs right in your browser — no uploads, no accounts, no watermarks.
PNG is the go-to format when quality matters more than file size: graphics work, screenshots, images with text, or any photo you plan to edit further. Unlike most online converters, your files never leave your device — decoding and conversion happen locally with JavaScript, so the whole process is fast and completely private.

How to convert HEIC to PNG
When should you choose PNG over JPG?
Both are universal formats, but they serve different purposes:
- Choose PNG when you need maximum quality: editing in Photoshop, images containing text or sharp lines, screenshots, or graphics you'll reuse many times. PNG is lossless — every pixel is preserved exactly.
- Choose JPG when file size matters: email attachments, web uploads, social media. JPGs are typically 3–5× smaller than equivalent PNGs.
Rule of thumb: PNG for working and archiving, JPG for sharing and publishing. If you're converting an iPhone photo to edit it on a PC, PNG is the right call.
HEIC vs PNG at a glance
| Feature | HEIC | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy, very efficient | Lossless |
| Transparency | Yes | Yes |
| File size | Small | Large |
| Compatibility | Limited outside Apple | Universal |
| Best for | iPhone storage | Editing, graphics, archival quality |
Tips for great PNG conversions
- Expect bigger files. A PNG can be 3–5× larger than the source HEIC — that's the price of lossless quality, and it's normal.
- Edit first, share later. A smart workflow: HEIC → PNG (edit on PC) → JPG (final share). You keep maximum quality through the editing stage.
- Transparency note: iPhone photos don't have transparency, so the PNG won't either — but any alpha the source had is preserved.
- Archiving: if you want a future-proof copy of important photos readable by any software, PNG is a safer long-term bet than HEIC.
A smart archiving workflow for iPhone photos
Here's a workflow used by photographers who shoot on iPhone but edit on desktop:
- Shoot in HEIC to save storage space on your phone.
- Back up originals to iCloud, Google Photos, or an external drive — never delete these.
- Convert working copies to PNG when you sit down to edit on a PC. PNG's lossless nature means you can crop, retouch, and re-save as many times as you like without cumulative quality loss.
- Export finals as JPG for sharing, printing services, or web upload.
This pipeline — HEIC (capture) → PNG (edit) → JPG (deliver) — gives you maximum quality at every stage with minimum storage waste. The converter above handles the middle step in seconds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is HEIC to PNG conversion lossless?
The PNG output preserves every pixel of the decoded image exactly — PNG itself adds no further quality loss. Note that the original HEIC was already compressed by your iPhone, so the PNG faithfully preserves that decoded result, not the raw sensor data.
Why are my PNG files so much bigger than the HEIC?
That's expected. HEIC uses extremely efficient modern compression; PNG uses lossless compression, which needs more bytes to preserve every pixel perfectly. For sharing, consider converting to JPG instead for much smaller files.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere during conversion?
No. The entire conversion — HEIC decoding included — runs in your browser via JavaScript. Your photos never travel over the network, which also means it works offline once the page has loaded.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?
Currently files are converted one at a time, but each conversion takes only seconds. For large batches, a desktop app may be more convenient; for occasional conversions, this tool is faster than installing anything.
Will this work on my iPhone?
Yes — ironically, it's useful there too. If you need a PNG version of a photo for an app that doesn't accept HEIC, open this page in Safari, convert, and download.
Does the PNG keep the original resolution?
Yes. The output PNG has the same pixel dimensions as the source HEIC photo — nothing is downscaled unless the image exceeds 8192 pixels on a side, in which case it's proportionally reduced to protect your browser's memory.
Can I convert a Live Photo's video part too?
The converter processes the still image portion of a Live Photo. The embedded short video isn't included in the PNG. If you need the motion part, export it separately from the Photos app first.
Is PNG or TIFF better for archiving iPhone photos?
For most people, PNG. It's lossless, universally readable, and far smaller than TIFF. TIFF only wins for professional print production with 16-bit color — overkill for phone photos.
